The style of your lounge can change the look of your whole room from overstated opulence to relaxed casual. Traditional Hamptons style is somewhere in the middle. At the elegant end, you will find the oversized lounge and buttoned armchairs.
Rattan and wicker chair furniture is at the more relaxed, coastal end. Left natural or painted white, an occasional rattan or wicker piece will provide that beach house feel without being shabby chic. Group your lounges and chairs around a central coffee table to encourage conversation.
If your living room is part of a large open plan kitchen area, chances are you have a wood or tiled floor, but you can make your hard floors a little cosier. Zone your living room with the addition of a rug, so it defines the kitchen and living areas. Choose a plush pile rug in muted colours if you prefer a more sumptuous look and feel underfoot. If you are after a more relaxed, coastal look, a natural coloured rug made from jute or sisal will be perfect.
Cosy up your lounges with plenty of plump cushions. If you have chosen a plain, neutral coloured lounge, your cushions and a throw can add interest and colour. Choose different patterns and fabrics in soft blues and greys. Mix up the fabric types for some added texture. Who wouldn’t want to snuggle up in this lounge with a good book?
Hamptons style is a somewhat minimalist style, but you don’t want to skimp on the decorative items. The pieces you include in your living room give it a point of interest and act as a conversation starter. Choose items in natural materials, whites or blues, greys and the occasional pastel.
If you like the coastal part of Hamptons style, choose driftwood, shells, glass lamps, bottles or monkey fist ball. Decorate the walls with neutral coloured prints, paintings or a nautical item such as a pair of oars. Finish the look with a mirror with a frame made of wood and leave natural, whitewash or paint white.
Nothing says classic Hamptons style more than a few blue and white ginger jars. Group your jars to add a punch of colour to the coffee or side table. If you want the beautiful jar shape without the colour, try white temple jars.
Add a touch of soft blue to the room with a bunch of hydrangea flowers. Arrange as a centrepiece on a table or mantelpiece or group them with other pieces in blue-hues.
Decorating your living room doesn’t need to be too difficult – start with a comfortable couch and remember to inject a little bit of your personality into the décor to make it your own.
